Going to these remnants of the Atlantic Forest is always magical. Low cost program and very high reward. It requires some physical preparation but I have seen people

The Tijuca Forest is a man-made reclamation of land around Rio de Janeiro that had previously been cleared and developed to grow sugar and coffee. Replanting was carried out by Major Manuel Gomes Archer in the second half of the 19th century in a successful effort to protect Rio's water supply. This followed concerns made by the Brazilian Emperor Pedro II in 1861 about erosion and deforestation caused by intensive farming, as declining levels of rainfall had already begun affecting the supply of drinking water.[ A train runs through the forest en route to the Christ the Redeemer statue atop Corcovado. In 1961, Tijuca Forest was declared a national park. The Forest contains a number of attractions, most notably the colossal sculpture of Christ the Redeemer atop Corcovado mountain. Other attractions include the Cascatinha Waterfall; the Mayrink Chapel, with murals painted by Cândido Portinari; the light pagoda-style gazebo at Vista Chinesa outlook; and the giant granite picnic table called the Mesa do Imperador. Among its impressive peaks is the Stone of Gávea.

It was very beautiful! Beware, when we went you couldn't drive up into the park which meant you had to walk up this ridiculously long street path.

The Tijuca Forest (Portuguese: Floresta da Tijuca) is a tropical rainforest in the city of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is claimed to be the world's largest urban forest, covering some 32 km² (12.4 mi²), although there are sources assigning this title to the urban forest of Johannesburg, South Africa, where between 6 and 9.5 million trees were planted.

Be prepared to trek uphill if you didn't come in your car. It will be well worth it. The waterfalls are refreshing. The trek through the forest is amazing. Definitely worth a visit.

On December 7 2018, my wife and I visited the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer perched on top of Mount Corcovado. After 20 minutes tram journey & walking up elevator and steps, the open arms of Christ greeted us. Since we are in our 70's, we felt blessed to be able to travelled thousands of miles by flight. Jostling with the crowd, we were able to take lots of photos of Christ & the panoramic views of Rio.

Even if you have been up sugerloaf and Christ Redeemer, this short hike is well worth the while! Views are stunning (and different!). But pay attention: on the way up make sure your driver drives you all the way to the parking place (which some don’t like because it is steep). Otherwise you start your hike with a very unpleasant and steep hike up a paved street. Moreover, note that when you come back, there is usually no cellular reception at the parking place. In order to get back to Rio by taxi or Uber, you can hike down from the parking place to the main street (this is much less unpleasant downhill). Then if you go left on the main street, you will reach a spot after 5 minutes where you have mobile and Internet reception again to call an Uber.
