The guards were actually pleasant , and give words of encouragement while waiting outside which really helps the overall tenseness... Very organized once inside and moved pretty quickly. Everyone is professional and straight to the point.

AWFUL (Why can't I rate with zero stars?). I will complain until something is done. My husband and I were married a couple years ago and he is originally from Brazil. He misses his family so we helped his sister and mother with all the visa documents so they could go to the embassy and apply for a visa. We've also been saving money to buy them flights and support them during their trip here. They live hours from the embassy but my husband's friend in Brazil agreed to drive them. When they arrived at the interview, they were asked who Eduardo is (my husband) and what they (his sister and mother) do for work. Then they denied it on the spot.....His sister and mother are both married and both have mortgages in Brazil (which of course they brought copies of)....The embassy didn't look at the paperwork, the sponsorship info..nothing...just denied. I worked with student visas and immigration for years....this is corruption!!!

No cellphones allowed, R10,00 to leave it with this people outside. Staff inside was extremely helpful and kind, they helped us patiently and everything went perfectly! Also, everything was well organized inside. Outside staff could be a bit more patient and helpful though.

Went to the consulate for my husband's permanent resident interview. I was so nervous and just wanted to put this process behind us. Everyone there was so helpful and kind. Happy to say that everything is all set and we are returning to the US on Monday!!

No cellphones are allowed into the building, but for a small fee there is a little hut around to the side of the consulate that will hold your things. The people working at the consulate trusts the service. They really didn't care to much about identifying me. They say I had my passport, but didn't check the information before entering. Inside was a little twilight zone for me. a bunch of people waiting to be called for their US visa interview watching a large flat screen playing the typical America poster video of what makes the country great. Meanwhile, those who finish their interviews exit either with a smile, or holding back tears. Was with a friend so I am not sure how the staff are treating visitors, they seemed nice for the few words I shared with them.

Very well organized. The staff were extremely helpful in assisting all of the visa applicants. The consular officer, a young man, was very friendly. Overall a great experience.

I sent a letter to the American consulate in Rio de Janeiro asking for my mother to come visit me in the United States for 2 months. She was denied Visa entry to the United States on the basis of not having enough ties to Brazil. This angers me because its completely untrue and shows a complete disregard for the facts when her case was evaluated, almost prejudicial. I feel as though the interviewer made a very prejudiced decision when conducting the interview. This is the only explanation I can think of that would have led to such a blatant disregard for the facts. The fact being that my mother cannot and will not move to the United States because of her responsibilities and family back home, she speaks no English, doesn't drive, can't work for age and health issues, she has no intend to live in the US, she owns a decent house with no mortgage, is retired by age, she has her salary and her entire life history in the same town, her roots in Brazil are deeper than the notion of the interviewers. They denied her a tourist visa so now I'll have to bring her with a green card which she's entitled to as a mother of a US citizen that she is.

Lost passport on a Sunday 1 day before flight back home through São Paulo. Went at 8am to US Consulate in Rio to see if I could get passport within 24 hours and was worried Id need to rebook my whole flight. After some miscommunication/language barriers with outside staff they helped me get passport photos two blocks away and a woman in a tent to hold my phone for 8 reals. Once inside the staff went far above and beyond in making sure to assist me best they could based on the hundreds of people they were already servicing applying for Visas to the USA. After filling out two forms (remember your important numbers and names people!), 135 and 45 mins later the consulate had a new passport ready for me and was ready to fly back home to New York. I can't thank the team at the Rio consulate enough. Amazing medal deserving team.
